Yield sign

R1-2 / Regulatory signs

A YIELD sign tells you to give the right-of-way to conflicting traffic. Reduce your speed, check for vehicles and people crossing your path, and stop if necessary. You may continue when you can do so safely without interfering with others.

Yield sign (R1-2)
A downward-pointing triangle with a red border, white center and red YIELD lettering.

What should you do?

Approach slowly enough to judge the gap. Check the crossing or merging traffic and allow it to pass before you enter.

A useful distinction

YIELD does not require a stop on every approach. STOP does. A clear road does not remove the obligation to stop at a STOP sign.
