Merging traffic sign

W4-1 / Warning signs

A merge warning sign tells you that traffic streams join ahead. Be ready for vehicles entering your path. The symbol indicates which side the joining road is on; it does not assign the right-of-way by itself.

Merging traffic sign (W4-1)
A yellow diamond with a main arrow and a smaller line joining it from one side. The illustration shows traffic joining from the right.

What should you do?

Check mirrors and nearby lanes, leave a useful gap and adjust speed smoothly. Follow any yield signs and lane markings at the merge.

A useful distinction

An added-lane sign shows two separate continuing arrows. A merge sign shows the streams becoming one.
