Slippery when wet sign

W8-5 / Warning signs

A SLIPPERY WHEN WET warning sign identifies a road surface that can lose traction when wet. The symbol is a reminder to reduce demands on your tires and allow more room, rather than a prediction of the exact path your car will take.

Slippery when wet sign (W8-5)
A yellow diamond showing a car above two curved skid marks.

What should you do?

Reduce speed before the slippery area, increase following distance and steer, accelerate and brake smoothly.

A useful distinction

The sign does not set a new numerical speed limit. You still need to choose a safe speed for the conditions.
