Earlier designs you may still recognize.

These historical illustrations are kept for reference. They are separate from our current sign guide, with the change in standard explained beside each design.

An outdated standard is not a blanket legal ruling.
A design's withdrawal from the current MUTCD does not establish that every existing road installation is unlawful. Follow the signs and controls on the road and the rules of your jurisdiction.
Historical 4-WAY plaque (R1-3)
Historical illustration · R1-3

4-WAY plaque

Outdated standard

The historical 4-WAY plaque states how many approaches stop. Current MUTCD Section 2B.04 paragraph 05 prohibits numerical approach-count plaques and uses ALL-WAY (R1-3P). This is an outdated standard design, not a finding that every existing installation is unlawful.

Roundabout directional chevrons

Outdated standard

FHWA discontinued the two-chevron R6-4 design, as well as the R6-4a and R6-4b variants. The current R6-5P roundabout circulation plaque is a related reference with a different placement and purpose, not a direct replacement for this island-mounted chevron sign.
